EU, US impose sanctions against Russia over treatment of Navalny

BRUSSELS, Mar 2 (PRIME) -- The European Union has imposed sanctions under the new global regime for human rights against four Russian individuals for the recent arrest and imprisonment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, as seen by PRIME in a document released on the E.U.’s official journal on Tuesday.

The restrictive measures include a ban on travel to the E.U. and freezing of the individuals’ assets. Besides, individuals and legal entities from the E.U. are prohibited to send funds to the listed individuals, the document read.

The list of the individuals includes Director of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin, Director of the Federal National Guard Troops Service Viktor Zolotov, Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov, and Directors of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia Alexander Kalashnikov.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has banned 14 organizations over the case of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, a high ranking U.S. administration official said at a briefing on Tuesday.

Of the 14 organization, 13 are commercial companies including nine from Russia, three from Germany, and one from Switzerland, and a Russian state research institution, involved in “production of components of biological and chemical weapons.”

The official also said that the U.S. will retaliate Russia’s “destabilizing movements” in four aspects in the next few weeks.
